New Music Friday
Oct. 2nd, 2021 02:32 amThat's right. We're back, baby. I've been hanging onto some REAL GOOD SHIT to share. Just hanging onto it... for some indeterminate amount of time. So here's some music old (ish) & new (ish) I hope you like it.
FIRST though. If you're a person signing up for Yuletide - I recced Vicious Lips in the nomination post. It's been nominated, can't wait to see more. I talked about it months ago after watching it on bad movie night with my friends and you can read my original follow-up post about here. PLEASE. It's brand spanking new to AO3 so I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed someone else picks this up too. PLEEEASE.
Okay. Now onto the music.
Let's start with TikTok. There are some fucking bops on TikTok and while it's not always a full song, I've definitely got recommendations for artists to follow. So here's some links to some cool artists doing their thing on TikTok. Follow them or find them wherever you listen to music. :D
realityshowreject with this cover of Goo Goo Dolls - Iris
mackenziemusic26 with this song - original with witchy, etheral vibes
nicotinedolls with this cover of Kings of Leon - Sex on Fire
Good stuff.
Violet Orlandi, one of my favorite of the metal cover artists on YouTube has remade one of the very first songs she did for her YT channel and it's SO GOOD. This is a metal cover for Florence + the Machine - Seven Devils. I love it so much.
I know that like everyone and their brother on Twitter is talking about about this and how sweet the response has been to this, but if by chance you haven't seen it, now's your chance. This is Lil Nas X for the BBO Radio 1 doing a cover of Dolly Parton's Jolene.
For a non-cover, non-pop/rock option, try this out instead. This is Foy Vance, a singer songwriter from Ireland with this wonderful Bon Iver-esque style. I introduced my dad to his music while we were trekking back and forth to Chicago and he absolutely loved it. We probably listened to his whole recent album five or six times while travelling. This version of "We Can't Be Tamed" is live and it gives it such a wonderful atmosphere.
A few last tidbits:
This new song out from Árstíðir which I cannot pronounce, nor do I understand what they're singing. But it's beautiful and I love it. Link is to their Bandcamp page for this new song, "Hvenær kemur sól"
And then this page, which I've honestly been holding onto for months now. It's a bandcamp article about little known Greek Hard Rock Bands? And I've listened to most of the ones on the page here. They're definitely worth a listen if you like Hard Rock of any variety. If I were picking favorites, I liked the bands Naxatras & Honeybadger the best? VERY DIFFERENT styles. If you like discovering new music, the Bandcamp scene pages are almost always good for something to listen to. They also usually from the top have an 'album of the day' posted. It's hit and miss, but if you don't mind music chaos mode, that's a place to start. OH and if you like dark, atmospheric, sounds like it belongs on a move score type music, follow the indie label Spun Out Of Control. I love just about every album they post.
Last by not least - the NPR Tiny Desk concerts for September have all been Latin & Hispanic artists of all shapes and stripes and sounds. I've found some real gems thus far, like Eme Alfonso & Maye.
ETA: OMG there's an internet archive for old retail store music tapes - it is fucking wild! This one specifically is for K-mart the week of July 26, 1992. Like... what? You can check out the whole archive for these tapes here.
That's it, have a great weekend, listen to some cool stuff and if you've got something you've been listening to a lot lately, I'd love to know what it is! <3
