New Music Sunday
Jan. 3rd, 2021 05:46 pmI didn't make it to get this posted on Friday even though I had it together. That's just the way this last week has gone. Also, when I have free moments (which is rare right now) I've been consumed by Hades and the Sisyphean task of trying to pass the first level. I am no good at these kinds of games, but it's pretty and it's got interesting character interactions and dammit, I want to see what happens. Maybe I'll give it up and watch a Let's Play. It's so much more interesting to watch someone else be frustrated at the game, and it takes much less time.
Anyhow. I came to talk about music, not video games. Not now anyway. So, let's get on with it. Just one video for this week, but a bunch of links down below.
We got new original song from Halocene, "Vita Nova" for new years eve. It's nice to see original stuff from them. The visuals for this video have a religious vibe, it's really pretty. We get a little more screaming from Brad than we do on their usual cover videos.
Rain Paris - Positions (Ariana Grande) a rock cover. Don't recommend the video if you have trouble with spinning transitions. I'm not really familiar with this singer/youtuber but YouTube does know what I like; getting this recommendation was a pleasant surprise. The sound really runs that middling line between pop, rock that wants to be metal, but isn't. And interesting take, but I liked it.
Jonathan Young & RichaadEB - Through the First and Flame (Dragonforce) If you're a metal fan (or played a lot of Rock Band), you probably know this song. It's kind of iconic for it's sound and difficulty. These guys knock it out of the park. And like what a great song to start the year with: "Through the fire and flames we carry on".
ezinma - Positions (Ariana Grande) but make it classical. I normally try not to do recs of the same song in these posts, but this one is too good to not put in here. So good.
Violet Orlandi - Cirice (Ghost) w/Cody Jonstone
I love the atmosphere in this one. Honestly, discovering Violet's channel was one of my favorite youtube musical finds of the year. And now I think she should definitely do more Ghost covers.
Ten Second Songs - Man in the Box (Alice in Chains) but make it synthwave. This is such a cool take on the song. Anthony's voice really can sound like Layne's. And I really love that he brought in a guest to play saxophone for this, it really adds to the whole thing. I know this song has been covered by everybody, but I really like this version a lot.
Dropkick Murphys - I Wish You Were Here If you've lost people this year, this song might be too much right now. But it's a slow, soulful song about the people that've gone before us. Really lovely.
Smith & Myers - Valerie (Amy Winehouse) I wouldn't have expected Brent's voice on a song like this, but it's good! I also enjoy these low-key studio session videos they do for covers like this. It's simple, but definitely showcases Brent's talent.
Night Club - Die Die Lullaby (full album)
A pop electronica band that's new to me - a grimy club music sound with a touch of bubblegum pop. I don't know exactly the best way to classify this band, other than I like it and it reminds me of some of the pop-ish goth music from my teens. Like if you were listening to Zeromancer or Rasputina or H.I.M. at some point in your life, then maybe you'll like them. This is the full album up on YouTube which was uploaded for Christmas. The album itself came out in October. I recommend checking them out.

I hope you had a nice holiday. Tell me what you were listening to this week, if anything, I'd love to check it out. Also, I'm going to post a year end music round-up in a couple of days and answer some questions about these posts. If you have any questions you'd like me to answer in that, let me know.
