New Music Friday: The Beatles edition
Oct. 9th, 2020 02:17 amSomething a little different. I've been feeling a bit nostalgic, helped in part by some good covers that have been up on YouTube lately. So I thought I'd bring you three recent covers of songs by The Beatles. Funny story though, last weekend when my friend was driving us to our cabin for the weekend, whatever classics playlist immediately started bundling Beatles songs back to back after I got in the car. She was laughing at the coincidence and I was loving it.
First is from Violet Orlandi who often is seen in covers of metal songs around the YouTube parts. She's got this very Amy Lee quality to her voice that's just lovely. But in this one, it's just hear in three-part harmony with herself singing "Because".
Then we have from The Main Squeeze, one of the best songs from George Harrison ever "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". I love so much about this cover, the slight funk vibes that the band adds to it, the dope piano into, Corey's buttery vocals with some of those high melodic notes. It's so good. This band is just so good.
Even better, if you (like me) have been enjoying everything from The Main Squeeze, they've got a new album out on Bandcamp. I haven't been through the whole thing yet, but it's on my agenda.
And then from Josh Turner Guitar we got this lively cover of "And Your Bird Can Sing". This is a short song, but it's well done by this trio here, most especially Josh's phenomenal guitar playing. An real unexpected treat.
Two honorable mentions here: The REO Brothers (a Filipino band of brothers) covered "Getting Better". And it's just so well done. They do a lot of classic pop covers, so you like this one you should check out the rest of the videos up on their channel. Then there's this amazing "Blackbird" cover by Geoff Castellucci who has this incredible bass voice and uses a deep five part harmony to put this song together.
The Beatles were my first musical love. I still listen to them often. Once, back when I was working in video game news I was there for the launch of The Beatles rock band edition and I cried when Paul & Ringo came out with Olivia Harrison to celebrate the launch. It was one of those things I just never thought I'd see in my life -- any Beatle live and in person and it was so nice to see Patti there too. Such a special moment.
What have you all been listening to this week?
Metal friends if you're hanging out down here, I didn't forget you (I would never). Check out this new song, "Trust No One" from Zeal & Ardor. If you haven't listened to the whole new entire Amaranthe album that came out last week, it's SO GOOD and you should definitely go do that too.
And for my pop loving friends, have you heard Cannons "Fire for You"? Check that out.
