New Music Friday

New Music Friday was a cold, icy Friday where I worked from home and by nighttime when the streets were clearer went out to get my hair done. My stylist, Garrett and his husband run a fantastic witch-themed salon and hanging out there is a good time where we talk about nerdy movies and television. We also talk about music and tonight the shop's playlist was really going through some early 00s something. It was full of this like hefty grunge and emo vibe and we were all just full gusto singing because there was no one else in the shop.
This week is also a video-less week of new music. Not because there aren't videos, but there's a lot of odd links and bits in this and it seemed easier to just smush it all down into a few links rather than to pick out what got videos and what didn't.
We got a album drop today, the Mania album from Halsey. I'm not sure yet how I feel about it, mostly because I can't get the weird country line-dancing orgy video for "You Should Be Sad" out of my head. I'm sure if I listen to the whole thing a few times I'll have a better opinion.
Two new songs from Kaleo came out this week, "Break My Baby" and "I Want More". Both of these links are just to the official audio videos put out on YouTube. I like both songs and I hope the sound of these two bodes well for their next album.
The Melodicka Bros are at it again with a new take on "Radiohead's Creep". This time it's a way too upbeat Reggae version of the song and it's surprisingly well done.
I can't remember if I've shared any of the Shitty Broadway videos with you but I feel like I should. There's a host of them on their channel, but I feel like you should see this video of "What Baking Can Do" from Waitress as if was sung by Mrs. Lovett from Sweeney Todd (actually sung by Mary Kate Wiles).
There's a new song from Sierra Eagleson out on Spotify with profits going to the Australian wild fires called "Brush Fire". I've mentioned several covers from Chase and Sierra in the past, but it's nice to see them put out something original and for a good cause.
There's a new Eminem video for a song "Darkness" which I feel like probably needs a large content warning, so I'm putting it last and the rest of the text here behind the cut. The song itself is a remix version of Simon & Garfunkel's famous song, much like Em has done samples before of songs like "Toy Soldiers" or "White Flag". The subject matter of this video though while it is trying to portray a message for change...CW: Gun Violence, Suicide
This video is interspersed cuts of Em rapping against a depressed individual from context we're supposed to recognize as the Las Vegas shooter. This is A TAKE. The text and the video detail has myriad information provided about gun violence in America and the many, many organizations trying to stop it. Showing the POV of the shooter though is definitely a choice. I'm glad that I knew what it was going into it, which is why I wanted to provide it for anyone looking to dive in.
