New Music Friday
Dec. 6th, 2019 11:49 pmI haven't felt great this week, both work and life stuff have been a little all over the place and I'm still coming off whatever cold/sinus infection I got last week. Music has been helping a lot this week at work to block out some of the nonsense around me and just get me out of my own head for a little while so I can focus. I've had a King Princess 1950s playlist up for most of the week, but the rest of it has been spent listening to this first band.
I don't often feel like I should apologize for songs I recommend to people, but this one definitely comes with a disclaimer. Church of the Cosmic Skull is a fucking weird band. They're a group of legit strange people that think they're a church? Or a cult? Or something? I honestly don't know what they're trying to do. What I do know is that if you're a fan of classic early 70's rock, you're probably going to like them. For a band this stupid, I sometimes get mad that they're so good. I've listened to the new album a dozen times through already, I don't have any excuses. They're a less metal-sounding Ghost, or a less screamy The Darkness. Folks, I don't know what to tell you other than give them a shot, they're good.
I'm a member of Orla Gartland's secret demo club on Patreon so I remember hearing a very early version of this song and really loving it. The very edgy feel of this song with the grittier vocals from Orla are really amazing. I'm not super sold on the video itself, but I can see what they were going for.
If you've watched the new Christmas movie Noelle on Disney+, you've heard this band and didn't even know it about 75% of the Christmas music in the movie is covers from this band. (Gracie is also the newspaper reporter at the beginning of the movie.) I've posted about them a few time before because they're one of my favorite bands of the past few years. Lawrence is a brother/sister duo, Clyde and Gracie and they have this upbeat, jazzy sound that's just fucking delightful. This song isn't new, but the video is and that makes it worth sharing.
Bonus mentions:
Malinda - Into the Unknown (acoustic cover)
Karliene - Walking in the Air
stories - High and Dry (Radiohead cover) w/Rett Madison
Ten Second Songs - Welcome to the Black Parade (in the style of Avenged Sevenfold)
Despite the one Karliene song (only because I love that song so much) I'm not YET much in the mood for Christmas. I haven't even listened to the new PTX album even though it's been out like two weeks at this point. Are you already listening to Christmas music or something else?
