New Music Friday (post-Halestorm concert)
Oct. 20th, 2019 03:35 amKansas City's (1) single rock radio station has for the last like 20+ years hosted an annual (near) Halloween concert. Usually, it's a concert I sit out, regardless of the band because I'm not a fan of the crowd that usually shows up for those shows. As much as I am a fan of concerts, metal & rock music in general, I've learned in my own 20+ years of concerts that your like generic "I like rock music but only come out for concerts I can drink a bunch at once or twice a year" isn't the crowd I want to hang with. I don't drink and I don't like most of the music they play on our one rock music radio station (it's usually rock that's sold old it's technically 'classic'). That's a long way to say that I'm not really a music snob but I am a snob about concert crowds. I will take a rowdy metal crowd or a dancey goth crowd over your generic rock band crowd, any day of the week.
Then again, one of the bands for this year's show was Halestorm. Anytime I can see Lzzy & Arejay in my town, I'm going to go. They were great. I found a new Canadian rock band I liked called Monster Truck (because they opened the show) and I was able to leave the show before 10, because I could care less about Godsmack. I stayed for two and a half of their songs, but I felt like I'd time-traveled to a 1999 rock concert full of drunk frat dudes in costume, and had to get out of there.
There was also a devil-themed costume contest at the show between Halestorm & Godsmack's sets. I have a severe phobia with masks and had I known in advance that the costume thing was happening? I might've thought again about the tickets. It wasn't too bad in that regard though, face paint is close and a really overdone look might trigger me slightly, but thankfully most people just wore devil horns and called it good. From the looks of the crowd most of the costumes were in general admission, which is not where I was. So, I managed that aspect of the show just fine. Plus leaving early meant not being in a dark parking lot with a bunch of people in red face paint and billowing black cloaks. LOL
Okay, on to newer things. Music for this week.
The new Caroline Polachek album, Pang, came out this week. The few songs I've already heard are really good, and while I'm linking to the whole album on Spotify, I also want to share my favorite song off the album. "Caroline, Shut Up" is both a) a really great song but b) a really great song about second guessing yourself in a relationship. Is the person your with faithful? Are they too good for you? Do you love them more than they love you? Real (good) anxiety brain kind of stuff.
I can't remember if I've shared something from Josiah and the Bonnevilles before. If you like that kind of indie folk, almost country, Mumford & Sons kind of stuff, then PLEASE check out Josiah's stuff. I love his voice, and his style. He's been working hard at making music since more than a decade ago when he auditioned for American Idol while living out of his car. All the the music videos he does are these kind of almost vlog style style, simple but thoughtful and I love them.
For the last video I'm going back to last week, for Malinda's new video featuring Thomas Sanders in this epic Disney-esque story music video. I didn't share it last week because I'm not sure the video actually does Malinda's voice any favors. I had to listen to it separately this week to really appreciate the song for itself without the story. But, because I also like this epic story that the video tells I'm posting it here. (Though I highly recommend giving the song a listen without the video, if it sounds like your kind of thing. I don't know if the recordings are even different -- but it does feel like a different mix when listening to it on Spotify.)
I also have three extras this week, a couple of honorable mentions from the last couple of weeks.
Borknagar - Voices A Norweigan black metal song with a kind of orchestral vibe. I'd never heard of this band before this song showed up in my recommendeds. But I love it.
Badflower - The Jester Holy crap the music video is kind of a tearjerker, so be warned. Badflower is another new band to me, and I'm not sure how to describe their kind of rock music, but I definitely got a kind of Bad Wolves, Kongos, Red Sun Rising kind of vibe from them.
Noah Cyrus - Lonely There's some serious content warnings here for depression and loneliness. It's a heavy song, but I want to share it because I know the feeling from this really resonates. Also, Noah's voice is really fucking beautiful.
