I only have one bit of music on the mind today. I've been listening to the Original Broadway Cast Recording that was released today for the musical Hadestown. I'm hoping most of you know what that is already. But if you don't, Hadestown is (very briefly now) a music about the myth of Orpheus & Eurydice. Originally called a folk opera by the music Anais Mitchell more than a decade ago, this album has been through some ch-ch-changes but the story has remained pretty much the same. In this version of the myth, Eurydice is lured away from poverty to board a train for Hadestown by Hades himself to his land of lights, sound and prosperity. Orpheus, a musician trying to compose a song big enough to put the world right again, learns of what's happened to his love Eurydice while he's been away composing and tries to follow after her. Of course, if he can't board the train to Hadestown (i.e. die), the trip is infinitely more difficult.

Um. I'm sure if you've heard people talk about it, you've heard about how great it is. And it is. If you're a fan of musicals, of early blues, of voices like Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen, I HIGHLY recommend you give it a try. It's such a good twist on the myth too, if you're into that kind of thing (which I am).

Of course I would recommend looking up the full album on Spotify [link] but I'm going to insert this video of the cast performance of "Wait for Me" during the Tony Awards this year. It's lovely.

Yes! I do love the piece in its entirety, but that track is the stand out!
