Hello (again)
Dec. 13th, 2018 11:40 amThis year I closed down a dragon age site where'd I'd been an administer for six years. With that change, I also dropped the name I'd been using online for about thirteen years, cherith. The fallout from closing down the site wasn't big, but there was drama and in an effort to remove myself from it once and for all, I picked up a new name, singedsun.
Everywhere I go I take a little part of Andrea Gibson's poem, "I Sing the Body Electric (But Only When My Power's Out)". I have a line tattooed on my arm, "it hurts to become". In context the full line of the poem is "I asked the sun to tell me about the big bang. The sun said 'it hurts to become'". This line has meant a lot to me over the years, it reminds me that sometimes we have to go through the shit to get to someplace better. That sometimes there is darkness before there is light. And in this specific case, that sometimes we get burned but come out better for it on the other side. Closing the board and changing my handle was way more liberating than I expected it to be.
I also realized that in the time I was running that place, I was mostly absent from a lot of places I would've rather been. My writing suffered and I'm hoping to work on that this coming year. Which is part of why coming back to a site like this appeals to me. In my old LJ days, I wrote so much because I was part of these great communities that were so encouraging.
So if you've gotten an invite from me here or on twitter, hey, nice to see you.
