From the IndieWire article with some confirmations by Kaufman himself, the explanation in that Den of Geek article seems to get the right conclusion about what's happening. But as I mentioned in another comment above, I really like that you can read multiple things in the movie without knowing if that's the real intent or not. I kept waiting for him to be a murderer or something and she's reliving this awful experience in her memories. The comments by the girl at the Roadside ice cream place definitely gave it that feel with her "you don't have to go forward in time" kind of line.
