New Music...Monday
Jul. 5th, 2021 02:45 pmA less than triumphant return to New Music Friday posts, given that it's Monday. I started this a week ago Friday and I had all these good intentions about getting it posted that day, and it just didn't happen. And then, I was going to update it for this past Friday and that just didn't happen either. But I had the day off today and finally had a chance to sit down and finish it up. So most of these are at least a week old or more... But I did bring music, so I hope you enjoy. I'm working on another post to talk about what's been happening lately, but I can't promise that as soon as I'd like.
Anyway. The music. I come baring music. First, this isn't new new, but new to like June, I think. Have you seen Todrick Hall's video for "Raining Fellas"? I mean, take a break right now and watch this absolutely bonkers gay anthem. It's AMAZING. I've watched this so many times, the song is great, the music video is super creative and I just love the whole thing. (Very NSFW though, so watch at your own discretion.) He's got a new video out today for this swing styled song, "Dick This Big which you might be able to guess is also NSFW.
Brass Against, which is best known for their brass covers of metal bands (very often Tool) has a cover of "Grand Canyon" by Puscifer (which is just Tool adjacent lol), featuring Roopa Mahadevan as the vocalist in addition to their regular Sophia Urista. The arrangement with the brass instruments and Roopa's voice, has a very Indian, South Asian vibe which really complements the song altogether. I really, really like this one.
Neoni, is a female pop-punk band I've posted about a few times I think. They had a lyric video out for their new song called "Machine". Even this lyric video is pretty great. Neoni sometimes gives me very early Imagine Dragons vibes. Sometimes they're more FOB. This I think falls somewhere in the middle and I really like it.
Because like a lot of people when I have free time I waste it on tik tok, and the algorithm has accurately identified me as a bi woman with mental health issues and a love of music, I see a lot of new up-and-coming musicians. I found Spencer Sutherland doing a live little preview of this song, "Shame" which is out now, and I LOVE it. I don't even know who I'd say this is like... but it's unique and just really good. (He does look a little like a buff Chris Kattan, which is hard not to notice once you see it LOL.)
Unrelated to anything new. I found these 2018 live recordings from 2018 at some small appearance in France of Damien Rice singing "The Blower's Daughter" and "Back to Here" and I just love them so much.
If you like soulful stuff, this two-parter from Leon Bridges is gorgeous: Why Don't You Touch Me: Part One & Why Don't You Touch Me: Part Two
Also here's some other covers worth checking out:
Levitating by Dua Lipa + Dynamite by BTS mashup by I AM KAWEHI
David Bowie - As the World Falls Down by Violet Orlandi
Nirvana - Heart-Shaped Box by STATE of MINE
Lastly, I've been reading through this bandcamp blog of Greek Hard Rock bands and it's been really interesting. I haven't finished listening to all of the bands listed there, but I did like Nightcrawler a lot, the band listed first in that post. Highly recommend checking out this post if you're interested in hard rock at all.
I hope you all are doing okay. If you've been listening to anything good lately, I'd love to hear about it.
