New Music Friday
Feb. 27th, 2021 01:25 amConsider if you will, Sufjan Stevens and Steven Sondheim. And then picture a lovely indie artist mashing up those two styles and artists and producing some quality covers. In this mind experiment you might end up with Eleri Ward, a youtube artist who does Steven Sondheim cover songs but arranged in the style that a Sufjan Stevens might arrange and perform them.
Now, me personally? Not the biggest Sufjan fan. I think I can count two songs ever? that I've maybe sort of enjoyed and I don't think I could name a single one of his songs right now if I had to, for any reason. However I am a secret fan of Sondheim musicals, they are among my favorites. So instead of putting together a bunch of songs from big performers this week, or bigger channels that support smaller artists, I thought I'd just put some of Eleri's covers here in the hopes maybe few people go over and listen to her really lovely voice and clever arrangements.
First is the ever lovely "Being Alive" from the musical Company. Her version really accents Sondheim's lyrical commonisms in that I can hear a multitude of his songs from different musicals in this songs. It's supposed to be both heartbreaking and hopeful at the same time and this Sufjan arrangement style really highlights the melancholy which is amazing.
IF Sweeny Todd is more your speed, check out her version of "Johanna" one of the softest and sweetest songs in that very dark, dark story. But this translates so well to this dreamy-lovely-indie vibe. This is the song I keep coming back to this week, over and over and over again.
And it wouldn't be fair to call out these amazing cover songs she's done without also pointing out some of the original music she has posted on her channel too. Here's her video for "Mind Reader" which is a total bop once it kicks in. It really showcases her style and her range. Well worth checking out.
So that's me for this week, really. A lot of this. Please check her out, she needs more views for sure.
If you need another little break from the norm:
