New Music Friday
Jul. 2nd, 2020 01:37 amHere we are again. It's Friday. And there is music.
Quite honestly, my whole current world is a little more even upside down than it normally is because we have both grandsons at the house for the foreseeable future. Like I don't even know how long we're going to keep them, except for "as long as she needs us to/we can legally have them". Right now that's looking like 2 weeks or possibly more if she comes up here too. Anyway that's a longer discussion for a different post.
Today we're here to talk about music. Of which I haven't been listening to much because my days are fully of keeping on ear out of my headphones for little boy mischief from another room. But I do have a few things worth sharing. So let's go there.
I don't think I've ever posted this group in one of these posts before so we'll start with Laboratorium Pieśni, a collection of female singers and musicians of which I think there are more of than we ever see at one time or another. But they're a Polish collection of musicians who heavily focus on traditional pieces with polyphonic vocals and the occasional low-tech instrument like hand drums and rattles. I love them. They give off a great witchy vibe, which I think is what they're going for honestly. If you've never heard of them and want to briefly sound like you're at the Ren Fest, give them a shot.
Next up is a new one from Neoni called "Vengence". Neoni as it is, is a group made up of two sisters. But this piece includes more than just them. They've been doing a lot of these crossover pieces. So this is Neoni x Silverberg x Saint Cardinal. And the result is this kind of badass rock vibe with female vocals like you might get as a movie trailer song, or a fight scene from a television show. It's good.
Last is the new Kawehi video, where she covers Whitney. And I absolutely could not love this more. She does her own take on Whitney's "How Will I Know". She's got this great loop in the background as she starts, and the drums hit the beat differently than the sort of 80's synth. She plays exactly in knowing that she can't pull it like Whitney does and her take is kind of heartbreaking and low vibes. Plus, there are puppers in shot, which always makes these videos enjoyable.
Album/EP mentions for this week, if that's more your thing:
Women in Music Pt. III by Haim
At Home a Pentatonix EP
Philophobia (Unplugged) an Amber Run EP
Slow Grenade an Ellie Goulding EP
What have you been listening to?
