New Music Friday
Mar. 7th, 2020 01:32 amFor those who read my post about my reading of A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine. I have since finished it and quite honestly, I don't have many further thoughts about it. I did feel a little more engaged in the last maybe five or so chapters, but that's not saying much. I'm putting off a written review on Goodreads for now because I don't know what to say about it other than I wanted to like it more than I did and I too often got lost in the words and rhythm of the language in a way that made it difficult to enjoy the interesting story happening in them. So there's that.
I got my hair done this evening and then finished out last night's episode of Critical Role (like two and a half hours left even after I'd gone to bed!), nearly falling asleep during their battle. I'm so happy it's the weekend, honestly.
But this whole week has been full of musical treasures, so I can't leave you without a post before I go to bed. I spent most of the week listening (on repeat) to the new Christine and the Queens EP "La vita nuova" -- it's just six excellent bops, including "People, I get Sad" which I posted a while back.
THEN Let's just do a quick run with some of the other albums/EPs I listened to and enjoyed:
caveat -- I don't know that I've posted much hip-hop/rap here, but it IS a thing I enjoy, and there's two very different albums on this list that're different than my normal postings. So just FYI, I guess.
Album links to Spotify as per usual:
And now to the videos:
Haim - "The Steps" :: I cannot get this song out of my head this week. I've recommended it already a few times. It has SUCH heavy Sheryl Crow vibes, I immediately tried to listen to the old Tuesday Night Music Club album (which still rocks btw) and then eventually came back to listen to this song. Fact: Danielle's drum solo in this music video is such a beautifully visceral moment and I'm just in AWE of it.
Melodicka Bros - "SOAD Toxicity but it's Cyberpunk/Electronica" :: I really don't want to like this version of a System of a Down song (or like any SOAD song really -- they're decidedly not my brand of nuMetal) but I DO. It's a very good take from a couple of guys that understand what they're doing with this sound.
Sierra & Chase Eagleson - "The Parting Glass" :: a little pre-St. Patrick's Day treat from two of my YT favs. They do a lovely rendition of this song and Sierra taking the lower melody and Chase with the high harmonies *clutches chest* it's beautiful.
Honorable Mentions:
In case your not yet tired of all the music in this post (I'm aware sometimes I go overboard here.) Links here go directly to YT videos and are a combo of covers and originals.
If you listened to something new (or old) this week, tell me about it!

- stories - "A Little Help from My Friends (feat. Charles Jones)" just Charles on a single piano, no accompaniment, and his lovely voice covering a Beatles song
- Ten Second Songs - "No Time to Die" A Billie Eilish song covered by Anthony in the style of Chris Cornell and it's really, really good
- Julia Nunes - "i really do" this feels a little different of a style for Julia, but I dug it
- Killswitch Engage - "I Can't Be the Only One" YES! I'm so excited about new music from Killswitch, this is great
