singedsun: the child-like empress from the neverending story (empress)
When I was driving home from work today I was composing a non-NMF post in my head since it's #NationalComingOutDay but now that it's several hours later on a Friday after my first week back at work, I'm too tired to really go through that. But, it's also been a weird week and I don't have much to share in the way of new/exciting music today. So I hope you'll accept this shorter post instead. If you did find some new music this week, please share it!

I think I mentioned in the last week or two that Lacuna Coil had a new album out soon and today was the day for that. So while I haven't listened to it in its entirety yet, I'm eager to. [Album on Spotify]

Then I only have two videos this week instead of three, so let's talk about them both up here. First is the new video from Julia Nunes - Used to Want, which also has choreography and dancing from long-time YouTuber Ava Gordy. This song from Julia is a post-break-up song, but it's not just about being sad you don't have someone. It's that specific feeling that knowing someone who used to want to be around, doesn't anymore. In this specifically it's also about making the choice to leave someone, and finding they're happy without you. That's a really complicated feeling, but a relatable one (for me at least). (Hey autocorrect, why don't you think relatable is a real word?)

Then we have a new-to-me post-rock, ambient band, Hammock. This song, Afraid to Forget is new and if you're looking for sad or melancholic music to write to, boy have you come to the right place. (Trigger warning for flashy lights.) I'm a big fan of Godspeed You! Black Emperor & Explosions in the Sky, but I don't listen to a lot of neo-classical, post-rock kind of ambient or cinematic type music. (I did go through both a Sigur Rós phase and a Mars Volta phase.) Anyway it seems like I'm slow to the Hammock train, but I really enjoyed this new song and I've listened to it a few times already. If you like to write to orchestral movie scores, you might give them a try.
