New Music Friday from GenCon
Aug. 3rd, 2019 10:43 pmDespite being at GenCon, I have been collecting songs for this week's post. :) Forgive my day-lateness due to the convention, but I spent last night at the Critical Role live show and my knee is still in pain so by the time I got home I didn't want to do anything. I've been trying to take GenCon carefully, listening to when my body has just has way too much walking/standing or just people in general. I don't generally get anxious around crowds but they do exhaust me terribly so I've learned to pay attention to what I feel like I can handle. Yesterday, I gave up after my morning game because I knew I was going to the live show, which was really smart. The live shows are A LOT to handle.
Anyway. More on GenCon later, right now let's get to the songs.
First up, let's get this Like a Version cover from Childish Gambino out of the way. He performed a Chris Gaines (Garth Brooks' alter ego from the early 00s) song "Lost in You" and he definitely pulls it off. Probably better than good old Garth ever did, although if you're curious in a comparison you can listen to the original, thanks to some good internet pal, here.
Next a new to me band brought into my life by that strange YouTube algorithm that often does me good musical favors. This band is called Black Pumas and the song is "Colors". Black Pumas have a very vintage soulful vibe, with a strong sound and great voices. I was in love 30 seconds into this song and I'm digging into some of the other stuff they have available.
And lastly, I feel this post would be remiss if I didn't mention that Haim has a new song/video out called "Summer Girl". Maybe you've already seen this everywhere because the famous director Paul Thomas Anderson directed this video (I'm not sold on the video, honestly), but if you haven't, give the song a listen. I feel like this is a pretty chill song for them, but I'm digging it. I think it's one of those songs that's going to grow on me the more I listen to it. Most especially that really strong sax vibe which I've always been a sucker for.
A few honorable mentions this week:
Also who would I even be if I didn't share this AMAZING fanmix that
sjnt made for my story "What I've Done to You". I love fanmixes BIG TIME, if I've ever not been super clear on that (pretty sure I have been) but getting a surprise mix just tickles me so much. I announced it to my dinner table friends at the restaurant the other night when the message came through, I was just so excited even at the idea, let alone for this story. And then I listened to it last night and this afternoon and for someone that hasn't watched Ozark, it's spot on for Ruth. I love it so much.
So if you need a playlist that's a little country, a little bad ass hip hop, get over to Spotify and listen to it here. And so many thank yous and much love to
sjnt for putting it together. <3

A few honorable mentions this week:
- Bring Me to Life - Jonathan Young This amazing cover of this iconic Evanescence song is just SO GOOD.
- Not My Proudest Moment - Anna Akana Anna's music is definitely growing on me, I like this one a lot and I'm sure I'll be sharing her more in the future.
- Walk Me Home - Pomplamoose ft. Cimorelli This kind of soulful almost country-ish take on P!nk's song is a good listen.
