How About a New Music Friday?
Jan. 18th, 2019 08:06 pmI've talked several times about what a big music fan I am. I check out new music Friday every week for new stuff and it's usually the day I check out things I might not be familiar with. I doubt this will always be new music as of the day I post, but I'll use it to share stuff I'm really into at the moment. I'm also a big believer in posting music from places where anyone can listen to it. So I'll try and keep my links to YouTube or Spotify.
dodie - If I'm Being Honest
I'm just going to reiterate my rec from Twitter today. If you like a singer-songwriter, please check out the Human EP from dodie. I'm in love with Dodie Clark's music and I think this EP is amazing, it's pretty much all I listened to today. Dodie has also been really honest about her mental health issues and being bisexual and both of those things are present in her lyrics, which I love. The whole EP is good and it's streaming everywhere. [Bonus song, cover edition: check out her cover (with Orla Gartland & Julia Nunes) of Ariana Grande's "God is a Woman" on YouTube here.]
Jacob Banks - Slow Up
This man's voice is something else. His album, Village, came out late last year and is full of amazing songs with some powerful lyrics. It's a toss up for me on whether or not to recommend "Slow Up" or "Unknown (to You)" because I heard the latter song first. "Slow Up" doesn't sound like your typical love song (because it's not) and I just have so many feelings about it. [Bonus: after you also listen to his song "Unknown" you should also watch his Mahogany session where he covers "Say Something" by A Great Big World. OMG it's here and it's so good.]
Dermot Kennedy - Power Over Me
Talk about a voice! This is a two-fer video but really it's the first song in this video that held my attention. This was a video done with Mahogany so there's a real focus on his voice and the amplification it gets in this big open boxing venue. This is a really new one for me too, I just listened to him for the first time when this video came out a few days ago but I've already listened to it a bunch. [Bonus video: he did an NPR Tiny Desk Concert that you can watch here.]
